Goal Setting Can Move Mountains

Goal Setting Can Move Mountains As I woke up at 5:30 this morning to get a head start on my day, I was debating what to write about today. First, lets start by saying that this whole 5:30 AM wake up call is new for me and is the result of doing a little 2010 planning and goal setting. It is also the result of reviewing my 2009 goals. Im a huge believer in goal setting and creating a plan for the year ahead. Its way too easy to get caught up in the routine tasks of daily life and then watch another year fly by with no progress. I always split up my annual plan into four sections: financial, health, career and personal. This year Im adding one more part: I want to do something challenging that Ive never done before. 2009 was a big year for me: I got a new job, a raise, I am living on my own for the first time, I got a puppy, I met and am dating the love of my life, I survived one whole month without shopping, I joined a womens mentorship program to help underserved high school girls head to college, Ive strengthened my friendships, took my first girls trip (to New York City- also a first for me) and feel a lot more stability and peace within myself. Im positive that I would not have accomplished any of these things or made the important changes that I did without my beloved 2009 goals. All year I kept my goals on my desktop at both my home and work computer and reviewed them frequently. Ive started on my 2010 list and encourage you to do the same. Split your goals up into categories that are important to you. Your goal setting should be SMART: S: Specific M: Measurable A: Attainable R: Realistic T: Timely This year Im planning on running my first half marathon, reducing my credit card debt, increasing my savings, and doing a lot more with Ms. Career Girl. Of course Ill need to set specific numbers for my financial goals, and define exactly what I want to do differently here at Ms. Career Girl. I will then break the goals down into what needs to be done each month, week and day to achieve them. Setting milestones (such as each quarter) to review your progress will keep you motivated and on track with achieving your goals and creating your own ideal life. What big goals did you accomplish in 2009? What do you plan on accomplishing in 2010?

13 Offline Resources to Build Your Personal Brand - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career

13 Offline Resources to Build Your Personal Brand - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career Whats a brilliant offline resource entrepreneurs can use to build their personal brands? The following answers are provided by the Young Entrepreneur Council (YEC), an invite-only nonprofit organization comprised of the worlds most promising young entrepreneurs. The YEC recently published #FixYoungAmerica: How to Rebuild Our Economy and Put Young Americans Back to Work (for Good), a book of 30+ proven solutions to help end youth unemployment. 1. Pack On the Press For us, the best way to build brand offline has been by engaging traditional media. Whether that means doing an interview for a paper or TV show about the topics that touch our business, or writing a piece ourselves for a relevant industry publication, its really worked wonders in building our brand and credibility not only among older generations but among Gen Y as well. Lauren Friese, TalentEgg Inc. 2. Face to Face Still Works There is still no better way to build your brand than getting out there, being visible and meeting people. Attend networking events, charity events, industry conferences, and any event that are consistent with your brand identity. Making a solid first impression in person is still the most effective way to build relationships. Richard Lorenzen, Fifth Avenue Brands 3. Work With Speaking Agencies While online resources can be helpful in building a brand, they often lack something that is best accomplished in person: connection. Joining a speaking agency allows you be a viewed as an expert AND to interact with people who are interested in your area of expertise. Once in front of this audience you, as a speaker, have the opportunity tonetwork and nurture a community of potential evangelists. Kent Healy, The Uncommon Life 4. Draft a Step-by-Step Guide As much as tech blogs would like you to believe that everything print is dead, local print newspapers still have high readership volume. Plus, they struggle to fill their pages with compelling stories. Consider writing a guest editorial about the state of your industry or a How-to based on your specific skill set for a newspaper; and dont be afraid to contact local dailies in other cities. Aaron Schwartz, Modify Watches 5. Start Your Own Meetup If a meetup in your area of interest doesnt exist, put in the time to start one and make it killer. If you can organize something good enough that people will come to you and get value from it, youll be well on your way to establishing yourself as someone meaningful in the space. Derek Flanzraich, Greatist 6. Network With Key Stakeholders Face time is more valuable tool today than it ever has been before. Business leaders and founders should make time to visit with clients and other key stakeholders as a means of promoting and getting feedback on their businesses. Personal interaction costs little more than your time and cannot be replaced by online resources. Christopher Kelly, NYC Conference Centers 7. Dont Forget to Volunteer There was no greater boost to my image of Mark Wahlberg than when I found him next to me serving meals at a soup kitchen line. So the brilliant resource here is authentic, personal service for others, a resource that everyone has a wellspring of without having to look anywhere outside of themselves. Luke Burgis, ActivPrayer 8. Talk to Your Colleagues Part of my consulting practice is helping professionals build their personal brands. One of the best ways to build your brand is to make sure you understand perception of your work. Email ten current and former colleagues individually and ask for their feedback on your greatest strengths and areas of development. Choose clients, co-workers and team members. Look for areas that align and surprise. Susan Strayer, Exaqueo 9. Become a Guest Expert TV media is an excellent platform to launch and build your personal brand. Becoming a regular contributor for local and national news programs is an excellent way to build your credibility and watch your fame rise. Melissa Cassera, Cassera Communications 10. Get Involved in Organizations Get involved with organizations in your area that count other successful entrepreneurs as members. In Columbia, Mo., we have EPIC, Core 20, League of Innovators, and many other cool organizations and groups that can boost your personal brand. John Hall, Digital Talent Agents 11. Come Up With a Conference Want to meet a ton of people and get the opportunity to impress them with your abilities? Plan and host a conference. It doesnt have to be anything major â€" a barcamp without even a set schedule can fit the bill. Its a lot of work, but theres also a lot of payoff. Thursday Bram, Hyper Modern Consulting 12. Spread the Swag Offer people swag that they will use. People dont throw out useful stuff. It gets your personal brand in peoples faces and keeps it there. For example, at Tax Receipts, we give away wallet-sized cards loaded with tax information, such as a handy guide for business expenses youre allowed to claim, so you can remember to save the right receipts. Nick Reese, Elite Health Blends 13. Invest in Your Health The better you look, the better you feel. Confidence and drive will increase with a dedicated exercise regiment, and there is no better way to improve your personal brand than with those features. Balance your life. Andrew Bachman, Scambook.com

Why Arent We Taking Action to Get the Help We Need - Kathy Caprino

Why Arent We Taking Action to Get the Help We Need Today, I was chatting with my friend and colleague Beth Leas who runs a fabulous holistic health care center in CT called the Total Life Care Center.     In her work and her business, she supports hundreds of other practitoners to find new ways to network, build their businesses, expand their reach, and launch new endeavors through powerful marketing and community-building.   We were discussing what weve both observed in spades this year that so many people who need and want help to create their own breakthrough in their lives and work, simply arent reaching out or  stepping up to get it.     We speculated all the potential factors behind this trend (there are many!), and we also brainstormed the root cause of this inertia and paralysis.   As we did, something wild came to my mind. Heres my thinking:   1) Thousands of people need help today to build their businesses, make life  and career change, make more money, find true success and fulfillment, get healthy, and figure out a new path that works for them.   2) People are talking to each other more extensively now than ever before in history, sharing their views more openly through blogs and social media, for instance.   3) Often, when we talk about our problems to others, we feel better for the moment, as it relieves our tremendous anxiety to share our worries and challenges.     This momentary relief, however, can actually rob us of the real impetus necessary to make true change in our lives and work.   We feel better for the minute by talking, and it lulls us to a calmer state, only to wake up in the same lousy dream weve been having for years.   4) Another potential issue (seemingly the opposite of point #3) â€" people and their businesses and professional performance are so visible these days through social media, websites, etc., that they’re more afraid to be truly authentic â€" to tell it like it is, and reveal their vulnerabilities and problems for fear it will reflect poorly on them.   Conclusion: Blogging,  social media and the digital movement are bad (JUST KIDDING)!   Blogging and social media arent bad.   What is bad, however, is that thousands of people who need help arent reaching out to get it.   Theyre staying stuck, despairing and hopeless because theyre trying to solve their problems themselves without getting help or an outside perspective.     Einstein said that we cant solve a problem on the same level of consciousness that created it.   I believe this with all my heart.   In isolation by ourselves, stuck inside our limited minds, we fail to see that shiny new possibilities, opportunities, and miracles are just one small step away.     That  key step is reaching out to get help.   Question of the week: Why do you think people dont reach out to get help when they truly need it most?   And what makes you finally say, Enough!! I need help, and now, and Im going to get it!     Id love to hear your thoughts and insights.   Thank you for sharing.   Heres to many happy breakthroughs, Kathy

Make the most of your job search - Sterling Career Concepts

Make the most of your job search Make the most of your job search Scheduling yourtimewhile unemployed isnt as easy as you might first think. Youll quickly burn out if you attempt to make the nuts and bolts of yourjob search a full-time obsession. Penelope Trunk wrote an excellent postyesterday about expanding how you should lookat your search. As an avidreader ofPenelopesBrazen Careerist blog, this may well be one of my favorite posts. (Heres another good one.) Take advantage of the timeto learn andgrow, she says. Her advice hits the nail on the head for unemployed (and evenunderemployed) professionals. The only things I mightadd to her list to volunteer or consider accepting atemporary assignment werementioned in other readers comments. As a former recruiter, I know fromspeaking toa multitudeof candidates how important it is to maintain a positive outlook while job hunting, especially as the weeks turn into months, but this is naturally very difficult to do if you spend entiredayspouring over the help wanted section, sending out resumes, and surfing job boards and social networking sites. Take the time to strategically invest in your personal and professional development. How yourepassingthe time during an extended job search is just as telling to a hiring manager as what you achieved in your last position.
